Get an internship in Chicago

So, you want a Chicago internship.  A lot of your friends are interning in Chicago, and you want to do the same.  An internship in Chicago is a great experience, but you need to keep a few things in mind if you want to land one.

First, use any contacts you have.  Don’t mass e-mail employers begging for an internship.  Send a few personal, meaningful e-mails to anyone you know in Chicago.  Try to get some referrals, recommendations, or contacts.  These will be huge assets in your internship search in Chicago. 

Second, have a focus in your internship search.  Even though you want an internship in Chicago, it shouldn’t be your only goal.  Research some companies in Chicago where you would be an ideal fit.  Have a few options.  Have some first, second, and third choices.  Think about what industries you want to work in, but keep an open mind.  If you’re into marketing, don’t say to yourself, “ I have to get a marketing internship in Chicago, and that’s all I’ll settle for.”  Don’t limit yourself to only advertising agencies.  Check out some companies that do in-house marketing.  Ad agencies love people who have had experience in the client-side marketing department.  Also, check out some PR firms.  PR is great experience for the advertising industry. 

Third, consider what you know about the city, where you want to live, and what the commute is like.  This is a necessity for following up on your Chicago internship.  If you get an offer, consider where the company’s office and what your housing options are.  There is a lot to consider besides the internship work when you’ve landed a Chicago internship.

666--The idea of donning a backpack and walking along (or thru) a huge land mass or exploring the flora and fauna one can really only see if one is IN its midst for a few days enchants me.
